Special Tree Group Makes Their Voice Heard in Lansing

On June 1, 2010 Special Tree was well-represented in Lansing at the first-ever Capitol Day jointly sponsored by BIAMI, MBIPC and CPAN. President and CEO Joe Richert, Children's Services Director Peggy Allen-Bock, Neuropsychology Services Director Dr. Randy Bruce, Rehabilitation Services Representative Mike Malley, Alumni Relations Manager Jim Hankamp, Therapeutic Activities Program coordiantor Sara Lundsten, and Community Services and Clinical Outcomes Director Kim Swartz met with a number of members of the House of Representatives and State Senators to express concern about recent House proposals that would have negative impact on Michigan’s Auto No-Fault system. The group voiced opposition to House Bills 6094 and 6094 which would permit as low as $50,000 Personal Injury Protection, impose unrealistic limitations on attendant care reimbursement, and require providers to conform to the Michigan Worker’s Compensation fee schedule which was never intended to provide for catastrophic, life-long injuries. In addition, they voiced opposition to House Bill 4747 (already passed in the house) that would repeal Michigan’s mandatory helmet law for motorcycle riders. Overall the day was a great success and the group felt our legislators really listened to their concerns and most seemed supportive of their opposition to these bills. Submitted by Kim Swartz, Director of Community Services & Clinical Outcomes
