Under the Big Top
Week 3 of Discover! Summer took our students on a trip to the circus! The week started with circus-themed movement games and therapeutic activities including everything from parachute games and a ring toss to building your own stilts and circus yoga.
Highlights for the week included learning to juggle and a visit from the Detroit Circus Show. Even though juggling was a hard task to learn, the kids had a blast – and all the hand and eye coordination involved in this therapeutic activity was great for their motor skills. During the interactive Detroit Circus Show, the kids had a chance to help the magicians with some of their magic tricks which required a lot of focus to understand how tricks were done.
Captain America, Iron Man, Black Panther, and The Hulk – the kids put their super powers to the test during Week 4 of Discover! Summer. The week kicked-off with the kids creating their own superhero which included drawing them, describing their super powers, and writing down the everyday qualities that make someone a superhero. They also played Marvel Bingo and created a Captain America shield which involved choosing materials to cut and paint the shield. The week wrapped up with an outing to the Alligator Sanctuary in Athens, MI where they saw a variety of reptiles first hand and learned how alligators survive in the wild.
Program Spotlight | Educational Investigation Group
Learning and academics are woven throughout the Discover! Summer program so students are ready for a successful transition back to school in the fall. Each week, students participate in an Educational Investigation Group that focuses on enhancing reading, writing, math, and social skills through hands-on activities that are tailored to each student’s academic goals.
